Ayurvedic Daily Routine: Dinacharya Certification Course, Section 12, Lecture 93
Introduction
Anjan, or Ayurvedic eye kohl, has been used for centuries to maintain eye health and enhance vision. However, Ayurveda advises against using Anjan in certain conditions to prevent harmful effects. If used improperly, it can lead to discomfort or even worsen underlying health issues. In this blog, we will explore the various conditions in which applying Anjan is not recommended, along with the reasoning behind these restrictions.
Understanding Ayurveda’s Approach to Eye Care
Ayurveda categorizes health imbalances into three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The eyes are primarily associated with Pitta dosha, and any imbalance in Pitta can lead to eye problems. Anjan, though beneficial, should not be applied when the body is in an imbalanced state, as it can aggravate underlying conditions.
1. Autoimmune or Inflammatory Disorders
If you suffer from an autoimmune disorder such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or chronic inflammatory conditions, avoid using Anjan. These conditions cause the body’s immune system to attack healthy tissues, leading to inflammation. Applying Anjan in this state may irritate the eyes further.
Ayurveda suggests detoxifying the body first before using Anjan in such cases. Detoxification helps eliminate accumulated toxins (Ama Dosha), which are metabolic wastes that can hinder digestion and overall health. If you have any autoimmune condition, it is best to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before using Anjan.
2. Indigestion and Poor Digestion
Your digestive system plays a crucial role in overall well-being, including eye health. If you suffer from indigestion, bloating, or frequent stomach issues, avoid applying Anjan. Poor digestion can lead to toxin buildup, which can interfere with the effectiveness of Anjan and potentially cause irritation.
3. Fever or Infections
If you have a fever, viral infection, or bacterial infection, it is advisable to refrain from using Anjan. Fever increases body temperature and often results in inflammation. The presence of toxins in the body during fever can cause further irritation if Anjan is applied. Wait until you have fully recovered before resuming its use.
4. After Crying or Emotional Distress
Crying places stress on the eyes, making them swollen, sensitive, and more prone to irritation. Applying Anjan immediately after crying can cause a burning sensation or discomfort. Similarly, intense emotions like anger, stress, or anxiety increase heat in the body, which can aggravate Pitta dosha. Since Anjan is best used when the body is balanced, avoid applying it when emotionally overwhelmed.
5. After Excessive Physical Exertion
After intense physical activities such as gym workouts, running, or manual labor, the body generates heat and sweat. This leads to fatigue and dehydration, making the eyes tired and dry. Applying Anjan during such times may increase discomfort, as the eyes need rest before being exposed to external substances.
6. Bloating and Gas (Udavarta)
Ayurveda considers bloating (Udavarta) as a sign of Vata imbalance. This condition involves the abnormal upward movement of air in the digestive system, leading to discomfort and disrupted digestion. Since Anjan interacts with bodily doshas, applying it during bloating may not yield beneficial results and could cause eye irritation.
7. After Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol consumption generates excess heat and inflammation in the body. This can make the eyes more sensitive and prone to redness or irritation. Applying Anjan in this state can cause a burning sensation and discomfort. It is best to wait until the effects of alcohol wear off before using Anjan.
8. When Experiencing a Headache or Migraine
Headaches, particularly migraines and sinusitis, indicate an imbalance in Vata and Pitta doshas. Applying Anjan when experiencing severe headaches may worsen symptoms and lead to increased pressure in the eyes. Those suffering from chronic migraines or sinus-related headaches should avoid using Anjan during an episode.
9. After Exposure to Wind, Smoke, or Dust
Long exposure to wind, pollution, smoke, and dust can cause eye irritation and dryness. If you have recently spent time in a windy or dusty environment, avoid applying Anjan immediately after returning indoors. Instead, wash your eyes with clean, lukewarm water and let them rest before applying any eye products. Ayurveda states that applying Anjan right after such exposure may lead to conditions like glaucoma or excessive eye strain.
10. When Suppressing Natural Urges (Vegavarod)
Ayurveda warns against the suppression of natural bodily urges such as urination, defecation, hunger, sleep, or sneezing. If you are holding back any of these natural reflexes, applying Anjan may cause discomfort, as the body is already under strain. Instead, allow the body to function naturally before using any external applications.
11. Excess Kapha Conditions (Cold and Congestion)
Kapha dosha is associated with coolness and mucus buildup. If you have recently had a head bath, consumed cold food, or experienced nasal congestion, avoid using Anjan. Cold conditions increase Kapha dominance, making the eyes more sensitive. Consuming ice cream, coconut water, or chilled beverages before applying Anjan may lead to eye discomfort.
12. Before Sunrise (Brahma Muhurta)
The period before sunrise is known as Brahma Muhurta, a time dominated by Vata dosha. Ayurveda recommends avoiding Anjan application during this phase, as the body is in a delicate state of transition. Instead, wait until after sunrise, when the body’s energies are more balanced.
13. After Using Nasal Medication
If you have taken nasal drops, nasal sprays, or undergone Panchakarma nasal therapy (Nasya Karma), wait at least 20–25 minutes before applying Anjan. Nasal treatments influence the nervous system and may interact with Anjan, potentially causing irritation or discomfort.
Conclusion
Anjan is an effective Ayurvedic eye care remedy, but it must be used at the right time and under the right conditions. Ignoring Ayurvedic guidelines may lead to eye discomfort, irritation, or even worsened health conditions. If you experience any persistent eye issues, consult an Ayurvedic physician or ophthalmologist before applying Anjan.
By understanding the Ayurvedic principles of body balance and doshas, you can make informed decisions to keep your eyes healthy and radiant. ✨
